BioScience Course Description

BioScience (also referred to as biotechnology) is a cutting-edge field of study used in many disciplines of science and technology, including cell biology, forensics, genetics, cancer biology, plant science, pharmacy, ecology and anthropology.  This course is designed to provide students with the knowledge, skills and applications to pursue further study in a biotech-related field and seek employment in the industry.  The safe and proficient use of lab equipment and management of supplies is another major focus of the the course.

BioScience 1

  • Level 1 students will do several lab-related activities, including:
  • DNA electrophoresis
  • Polymerase chain reaction (PCR)
  • Restriction enzymes and digests
  • Recombinant DNA
  • Plasmids and bacterial transformation
  • Spectrophotometry
  • Protein assays
  • Sterile and other microbiological techniques

In addition, students will develop basic lab skills(making solutions, the use of specific lab equipment and record keeping).  Students will investigate various careers and fields of study that involve BioScience knowledge and skills.  In addition, students will be introduced to the bioethical and legal issues associated with the growing field of BioScience.

BioScience 2

Level 2 students will be expected to know and be proficient at all BioScience concepts.  In addition, they will learn advanced techniques, such as:

  • Protein (SDS-PAGE) electrophoresis
  • Western blotting
  • DNA barcoding
  • Plant and animal tissue culture

Students in Level 2 will also be working on one or more whole-class research projects and may be able to use a limited amount of class time to conduct independent projects.

BioScience 3

Level 3 students will be conducting their own independent research.  Instruction will center on how science research is done:

  • Posing of testable research questions
  • Design of experiments
  • Collection and analysis of data
  • Presentation of research findings

Students in Level 3 are strongly encouraged to pursue an internship in the summer or during the school year.
